Sorry about that. It’s just an absurd claim.

Really depends on area within many states and family size.

Virginia is misleading. In northern VA (Fairfax County, e.g.), the cost of living is exorbitant, while in most other parts of the state, it's quite reasonable.

For example 120k/year in the SF bay area is definitely no better than middle class.

Numbers nowadays are crazy and don't make sense. My dad was making about $10,000 a year in 1970, and his home in SF was about $20,000. The home cost about double what he made per year. That same home is worth about a million now. A person making $100,000 can't afford it. That ain't middle class if you can't afford a home.

My dad with wife and 4 kids made much less then me but he was able to own a 6,000 sq/ft home that he had built for $43,000 <— yep! (built 1962) (Minnesota) that had a creek in the back and a pond within site a few hundred yards away. Elm trees to provide shade and a maple tree out front for more color come fall. I make slightly less then the current median class pay (Minnesota) but I live in California (San Fernando valley) now and the $60,120 they list is way to low to afford a small house let alone what you can buy in other states.
They need to show what you can buy with the money today.
