Easter Sunday protest over Serra planned at Carmel Mission
Monterey Herald ^ | 04/01/15 | Phillip Molnar

An Easter Sunday showdown at the Carmel Mission is expected between Native Americans and the faithful over the canonization of Father Junipero Serra.

Anger among tribes has been growing since January, when Pope Francis announced Serra, who is buried at the mission, would be made a saint. Native Americans and their supporters plan a 1 p.m. gathering near unmarked burial sites adjacent to the mission for a “ceremony for our ancestors” — just as believers begin Mass on the holiest day in the Christian calendar.

“For too long the mission system has been glorified as these wonderful moments of California’s golden era,” organizer Corine Fairbanks of the American Indian Movement Southern California said. “That is not true. They were concentration camps. They were places of death.”

All of this happened some 250 years ago. Talk about holding a grudge. Let it go. What these folks ignore is that when Serra came to California the local natives were living a stone age existence. They were hunter gatherers with no written language and were not even on top of the food chain being preyed upon by the California grizzly. It was a tough life and the missions offered the benefits of civilization including agriculture. More power to any of these protesters who would like to go back to that way of life.

Before Serra came the tribes were killing each other.

Some would likely have been exterminated by other tribes.

Head-bashing and being shot full of arrows was a Sunday sport.

Do the tribes really think they were better off in their “state of nature”?

But if we’re going to show indignation over events of 250 years ago, then I’m going to start protesting England’s repression of Scotland after 1745!

I think I’ll go protest at the British embassy over the treatment of my great-grandparents during the Irish Famine.I have nothing else to do today and if I work at it, I can get really mad.

LOL...that reminds me of a little ioncident that happened at work a few years ago....

I had the radio on and something was said about it being Columbus day.....one of the guys on the crew is latino...

He chimes in with “F-ing white people ruined this country and we celebrate it?”

I said “whut?”

he said “yeah you f-ing white people discovered America then came over here and screwed it all up”

I laughed out loud.

I asked him “do you know the names of Columbus’ three ships?”

he didnt answer...

I said “You know...say them with me...the Nina, the pinta and the Santa Maria”

He says “so?”

I said...”who did Columbus sail for?”

no answer

” you know....the king and queen of SPAIN??”

“so?”

“Do you know what language is spoken by most hispanics in the western hemishpere?”

No answer

“SPAINISH???”

“So?”

I said “YOUR ANCESTERS CAME OVER HERE AND F’D IT ALL UP LONG BEFORE MINE GOT HERE”

A couple of the other guys burst out in laughter and he sulked away...

He later came up to me and said he had never even thought about it like that and and apologised.

I grew up visiting that little church in Carmel and learning the history of Fr. Serra....
These people need to move on, get a life and let people worship in peace on the the holiest of days...shameful expression of intolerance...

I have had to deal with that at my work as well. Vilifying Columbus, etc., I counter with the fact that it was the Age of Discovery and that if it hadn’t been Columbus it would have been another European explorer to trash. It is a very easy thing to judge people who existed 500 years ago and attempt to assign our values to them. One guy who is of mixed heritage (Native American and Mexican) was ragging on Columbus and pretty much the same line, Europeans came over and ruined it blah blah blah. I told him what would you expect when a technologically advanced civilization encounters people that hadn’t even invented the wheel yet? He had no answer for me and left pretty quickly.

Just more mob hysteria, the only point of which is to hurl spit at Christianity. Guess the Indiana indignation is wearing a little thin.

Great story!

He’s lucky you weren’t the kind to report him to Human Resources for the “you f@#$ing white people” remark, which he repeated.

Guy sounds like a loose cannon.

Imagine if you said this with any other substitute for the words “white people”.

No Fr. Serra—No Missions—No Missions, no Spanish California—No Spanish California—it would have gone to the Russians! Look at what they did to natives in Alaska? Or worse yet—what if California had gone to the Young US—at that time Indians were considered Vermin and killed. Look what Yankees did to hawaii. No Serra—there would be no living Native People alive to protest.
