the photos of the Chinese smog...that I've seen...in the last ten years...appear to have been taken in the midst...of a massive firestorm

If by "firestorm" you mean huge brush fires (like what often happens in California and Australia) it seems strange that I encountered unbreatheable air caused by such brush fires *each* time I went there.
