Sensing vulnerability in the GOP’s control over state government after four rocky months under the Ducey administration, Arizona Democrats are wasting no time in trying to crank up voter turnout for 2016.
And if Andy Dresden, D-Casa Grande get his way, that aggressive posture will swim in waters never before tested in Arizona, or any other state for that matter.
“I am proposing a bill to make Spanish the official language of the Great State of Arizona,” said Dresden, who admitted he, himself, ‘even in a Taco Bell drive-thru,’ does not speak Spanish, “There’s a reason America has never had an official language all along - it’s been waiting to make it Spanish all along.”
As expected, House Republicans are roundly critical move they see purely as political grandstanding.
“This is just shameless, unpatriotic, unconstitutional and, frankly, insulting,” said Kathy Robey, R-Flagstaff, shortly after she proposed a counter-measure to Dresden’s, calling for “American” to be the state’s official language. “If you can’t speak American, then you can go back to Spain.”
But Arnie Stapley, Professor of Ethno-Retribution Politics (PERP) at the University of Arizona, said he thinks the idea is just crazy enough to work.
“When proposing a bill that could never pass, the details of that bill are almost entirely irrelevant,” Stapley said. “To further associate Republicans with being anti-Latino could, in some groups, increase voter turnout by as much as 17 percento.”
When reached for comment, actor Lou Diamond Phillips called the bill “La Bomba.”
Rep. Dresden’s bill is due for a vote before a House subcommittee on cinco de mayo, where it is expected to be soundly defeated.
Very inadequate. Arizona needs 6 official languages: Spanish, Navajo, Hopi, Apache, Pima, and Papago.

I went into a Taco Bell in Dayton, Nevada, a few years ago. Everyone there was Spanish. The lady who took my order called it back to everyone in Spanish.
I asked her if she was the only one who spoke & understood English.
She said yes-—
I walked out.
Yes you think it’s bigoted of this person to support their own culture over the culture of another nation.
