Opinion: Could the anti-immigrant loudmouths pass a U.S. citizenship test?
Los Angeles Times ^ | March 30, 2015 | By TED RALL

To listen to talk radio and cable television, which are dominated by conservatives, the national and state debates over immigration give the impression that most legal residents of the state of California oppose immigrant workers here illegally and might even be favorably disposed to Mitt Romney's suggestion that they "self-deport."

As it turns out, however, the voices of anti-immigration forces are disproportionately louder than their actual numbers.

A new poll of likely California voters shows that a whopping 73% support granting citizenship to immigrants here illegally if they agreed to pay back taxes, pass a background check and learn the English language.

At this point, it's clear that nativists have lost the argument.

It's also ironic that we demand that people who come to the United States learn English, yet 14% of U.S. adults can't read. Should we throw them out?

Here's an idea: Let's deport everyone who can't pass the basic requirements to become an American citizen, whether or not they were born here.

The country will empty out in no time.

You never hear them complain about TELEVISION news, which is dominated by liberals.

Only how ‘talk radio’ is dominated by conservatives.

I passed the U.S. Citizenship test....

I was born here. The US Constitution says that’s the only test I need to pass you moron, Ted Rall.

BTW Teddy Bear - Nobody has any objection to those immigrants who pass the U.S. Citizenship test, BECAUSE THEY ARE LEGAL IMMIGRANTS!!!! LEGAL! Got it? LEGAL!

Do you, Ted, have any idea what the Constitution means? I’ll give you a hint: It means that NO MATTER WHAT THE MAJORITY WANTS, if it violates the Constitution, THEY CAN’T HAVE IT!!!!

But we watch Fox News and listen to talk radio.

That actually might be a good idea. The people left would be the productive kind that can hold down a job and pay for themselves.

I propose that we take all the assets of EVERY illegal and send them to the Border. We can be very nice and allow them to keep the clothes they are wearing and give them $200 to restart their lives someplace else.

If Mexico doesn't like it, we can remind them that most illegals from most countries came here through their border with the US.

If they still don't like it, we take back Mexico in its entirety since we won it fair & square in the Mexican-American War that THEY started. Our government was too softhearted to keep it and we gave the part the is Mexico back to them.

I hear Leftist screeching about “fairness”. They should be very happy with this solution.

It would only be fair.

It’s economic treason to allow even legal immigrants in when we have high unemployment of legal citizens.

It’s beyond ridiculous and very clearly TREASON to even suggest that we should allow ILLEGAL invaders into our country.

I just took an online Naturalization Self Test. I got 24 out of 25 correct. The one I missed was, I said Thomas Jefferson was one of the authors of the Federalist Papers. It was a guess because I couldn’t remember who the authors were.

“Seems to me that immigration opponents ought to focus not on the people who are here and who should be grandfathered in, but on preventing future illegal immigration by lobbying Congress to build an impermeable border between the United States and Mexico.”

Already been there, tried that. Fact that government failed to comply with the law is why we are in this mess.

Which is why it has to be made clear that illegals not only are to be deported, but cannot legally be hired or given housing. We need to make them self-deport.

In addition to answering questions I can claim 1) to be one of several generations of my family who, collectively, have paid millions of dollars in taxes...2) that I am one of a number of members of my family who have served honorably in the US Armed Forces...3) that I am,along with all of my relatives, one to have never been even *charged* with, let alone convicted of,a single crime....

I could go on regarding my right to be here and the ways that this country has benefited from my presence.
