Senior editor of Saudi online paper Arab News, Siraj Wahab, has just tweeted that Egyptian ships forced Iranian retreat from Bab Al-Mandab strait near the Port of Aden.

A statement issued by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that Egypt is coordinating with Saudi Arabia, together with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for the participation of its Air Force, Navy, and ground forces, should it prove necessary.

However, it should be noted that Iran threatened Saudi Arabia today (Thursday), announcing that its foray into Yemen would end up costing it dearly.

Hit twitter about an hour ago.

What's happening isn't clear, so for the moment, file this under "Unconfirmed", but Arutz obviously thought it was important enough to report.

Darn, we haven’t had a good ship to ship battle in a long time. Hope CNN has some crews there.

Lets treat our Egyptian friends better than that. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi started this ball rolling I believe and he’s conducting his war of persecution on Islamunists.

From RT’s Iran Live Blog:

22:28 GMT:

The Saudi Arabia-led navy forces began their blockade of the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, at the tip of the Red Sea, Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram cited sources as saying. The blockade comes despite earlier promises by US Army General Lloyd Austin that the strait would remain open for shipping.

Iranians don’t want to get into a shooting war with Arab countries right now days before they sign the nuclear deal. Maybe on Monday they will shoot back, but for now they are content to support every rebel force in the region (except ISIS) and keep arms length deniability.

Meanwhile no one is addressing the obvious. Iran is currently in a three front war. Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

If there ever was a time for Israel to finish off Hezbollah this would be it.

Iran is hardly stretched militarily. They are mostly just supporting rebel groups with weapons and a small number of troops are stationed in those countries. Iran and Syria have a mutual defense agreement in place, and the Shia have common cause with the Alawites which is the ruling clan in Syria (but only about 12% of the Syrian population) and is an offshoot of the Shia sect.

Debka saying that Saudi forces took control of the Yemeni town of Bab el-Mandeb at dawn.

While I can easily see it, it is Debka, after all.

“An Army General in charge of a shipping lane?”

As CENTCOM Commander, all the Service Component Commands in that area are under his command.

MORE:

The Saudi-led Firmness Storm coalition has imposed a naval blockade on Bab El-Mandab strait which connects the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean, sources told Ahram Online.

The Saudi navy’s western fleet has also secured Yemen’s main ports including Aden and Midi.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s most strategic water arteries, connecting Europe to the Persian Gulf and East Asia.

To the south, Bab El-Mandab strait connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, while, to the north, Egypt’s Suez Canal provides passage to the Mediterranean Sea.

States which secure the Red Sea for international navigation include Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Yemen, Djibouti and Saudi Arabia

This is funny because I was watching season 1 episode 18 (or so) of “Revolution” last night on netflix...

two steam powered river boats chasing one another at 2.5 knots.

which also reminds me of George Costanza (sp?) racing scooters on Seinfeld.
