BBC Shows Wait Time for Products in Venezuela; Avoids the Why

WHY? WHY? WHY?

That is what your humble correspondent wants to shout at the computer screen while watching this BBC Mundo report presented by Daniel Pardo in Venezuela. Pardo actually has a good idea, namely to see how long it takes to buy eight basic home products (yes, including toilet paper) while waiting on the notoriously long lines in that country. Unfortunately he does not inform us "why" the situation is so dire even though the S-word providing the answer is proclaimed on wall posters all over that oil-rich but impovershed nation. Therefore Pardo is this week's winner of the John Chancellor Avoidance of the Economic Obvious award.

A full day waiting on lines and he still hasn't bought toilet paper. Oh, but don't blame the S-word that dare not speak its name.

I remember reading about a place, back in my youth, a place called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics where standing in line for consumer goods was the norm. A place where standing in line was so much the way of getting things that if a person saw a line forming one just as a matter of course joined the line before one knew what the line was for.

Unfortunately, it seems that the world’s population is destined to suffer the disaster of socialism before they recognize the virtues of capitalism.

One of my roommates lived in Russia while the American embassy was being built. I remember her telling me how people standing in lines would buy clothes and shoes that weren’t their sizes. They were forced to buy what was left after standing in lines for hours in hopes of being able to at least wear it or maybe being able to trade it for something else.

Even more unfortunate is the simple fact that most of them still won't get it.

During the Vietnam War, it was hoped that South Korean troops would sway the Vietnamese by showing off the products they had that had been made in their country. Unfortunately, the lesson didn’t take (probably because the Korean troops were brutal - they thought they were there to win a war against communism).

Those ROK troops were tough.

There were dire consequences to be caught

sleeping on guard duty if you were ROK.

That was my only experience with them...Bang.

Most socialists believe they are against oligarchy, and never notice that socialist countries are always oligarchies.

The Viets were terrified of them; they didn’t win hearts or minds (but protected themselves well, and were effective against the enemy).
