Journalist Glenn Greenwald reported on Thursday that the USA told the German government it would cut off intelligence sharing if the country offered NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden asylum.

Writing at The Intercept, Greenwald said he was told of the threats by Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel after an award ceremony in Homburg on Sunday, where the journalist received the Siebenpfeiffer journalism prize.

“They told us they would stop notifying us of plots and other intelligence matters,” Gabriel said.

“If the threat were carried out, the Americans would literally allow the German population to remain vulnerable to a brewing attack… by withholding that information from the government,” Greenwald wrote. …

Well, that sure is a joke, given how dependent US intelligence is on not only the Bundesnachrichtendienst but many other foreign intelligence agencies besides. (Of course, in the case of the Tsarnaevs, they just ignore such intelligence.)

Wonder how many noticed that the US was utterly excluded from those last talks over Ukraine and Crimea? That was primarily Germany and Russia. The USA sure has stopped being a superpower. Obama’s waffling about “exceptionalism” comes to mind.

How’s this playing with the German population? If their gov would submit to threats over Snowden asylum, one wonders if such threats weren’t used for other things. Like for instance the sanctions against Russia.

If the Germans really wanted to push back, then all they have to do if threaten to shut down Ramstein.

It also explains this:

The government will go to the ends of the earth to chase down someone who embarrasses them, but won’t lift a finger against actual terrorists even when they get a tip handed to them on a silver platter.
