It's hopeless. In absence of survival pressure (such as sabertooth tigers in caves, or death from hunger in winter if the field is not tended to in summer) people go on tangent and never return. They have too much free time for nonsense.

Over 2,000 years ago, the Roman Seneca the Younger thought that technical "progress" would lead to deterioration of spirit and character, since said progress would minister to luxury and vice.

Very true, which is why wealthy, dominant societies become very decadent just before they collapse, leaving behind a more brutal life in which comfort, safety, and security can no longer be guaranteed. This forces people to have to work to survive, making them more industrious and resourceful and more able to build a society in which comfort, safety, and security can be guaranteed...

And repeat.
