Washington (CNN)Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ruled out the creation of a Palestinian state Monday, setting off another potential showdown with the Obama administration should the Israeli leader prevail at the ballot box the following day.
In the campaign's waning hours, an embattled Netanyahu tried to make the case that he deserved a third term in office because he best can handle threats to Israel and that a Palestinian state won't be formed because of the danger it would pose.
"Anyone who is going to establish a Palestinian state, anyone who is going to evacuate territories today, is simply giving a base for attacks to radical Islam," he said, mocking those on the left who "stick their head in the sand" on the issue.
His statements are a reversal on a key issue not just for Israeli voters but the country's foreign partners, particularly the United States, which has made the creation of a Palestinian state a major policy aim.
Netanyahu has repeatedly sparred with President Barack Obama over U.S. efforts to seal a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians, and flaring tensions between two leaders erupted in recent weeks when the prime minister came to Washington to lobby against the White House's Iran policy.
Netanyahu's statements add more fuel to that fire, and further set back any hope for a peace agreement during Obama's final two years in office.
Differences over Israeli policies toward the Palestinians have been a major friction point between the two countries ever since the two men assumed office in 2009.

Obama will make the Palestinian state the 58th State ?
PM Netanyahu knows he doesn’t have an ally in the WH, he loves his country unlike 0bama.
Cancerous cells when peeled off die.
When Obama is finally peeled off his position, he won’t. He’ll stick around to confound weak minds for decades to come.
It is always what it means for obama with this cnn.
Netanyahu was talking about this before, but he “hard-lined it” today. So, it’s not something that was unknown to the Israeli voter. He had been talking about it before. Now he makes it a very emphatic promise and basically closes the door on it, permanently. That plays well with Likud and others to the right, but the Zionist Union has used the ploy that Netanyahu is destroying the special relationship with the USA (not saying that it’s true, but that this is the campaign), and this plays into the Zionist Union campaign rhetoric.
SO, it appears that Netanyahu is not saying this to the general voting electorate, as much as he is more specifically to his own like-minded voters, in order to pull them away from the other “right parties” and pull them into the Likud.
He at least has a respect for this nation that Obama will never share.
I respect Israel in return.
We are mutually important to each other as nations.
Israel is civilization’s outpost in the Middle-East.
Those that fail to grasp that, won’t grasp many other things.
Amen to that. Well said.
180 IQ meets affirmative action baby.
LOL, there’s truth in that...
Thank you.

Bttt
Did not today the center-left alliance fall apart in Israel, making it less likely PM Bibi will lose?
Are Israelis going to be as dumb as we Americans and elect someone who will not defend them from heir enemys? Or will they show wisdom and re-elect BeBe? It’s their decision and they better be ready to pay the consequences of a foolish vote.
Israel alone cannot make peace.
That’s true regardless of who wins tomorrow.
If its a grand coalition government, Obama may well be disappointed.
The creation of a “Palestinian State” has NEVER been the goal of the United States. It has been the goal of the line of oligarchs who wish to dictate Amercas foreign policy over the plain will of the American People. The real position of the American People is to End the Occupation of the Holy Land by the illegal interlopers. That means: MUSLIMS OUT! Every last one of them and their dogs, goats and cats, OUT! Others who are willing to pledge singular loyalty to Medinat Yisrael may stay. The American People love Am Yisrael and millions of them would be happy to enlist in a military contingent to surround her with protection. We learned all we need to know about Islam on 9-11. So we say turn every mosque into a synagogue and ship the Muslims out. If they want their structures from the Temple Mount they can be disassembled and shipped to Mecca where they belong. It’s about time Israel and the West did Teshuvah and honored the G-d of our Fathers. It’s time to come home prodigal son.
Yup. No more fake peace. Israel for Jews, and those willing to defend Israel as a Jewish state. Period.
