Fascinating - the title is completely unsupported by the text.

Are we to assume, despite all that is observable, that environmental activists are merely observing and reporting on nature, that they are not, in fact, "modeling" the past and the future using data that has been doctored to promote their ideology - Lysenkoism?

Science writers, like Laura J. Snyder, would be kings - they would be like gods.

Lysenkoism is used metaphorically to describe the manipulation or distortion of the scientific process as a way to reach a predetermined conclusion as dictated by an ideological bias, often related to social or political objectives.".....

WTF was that?

The title is on distant island, marooned far away from the content and incompatible with either’s invented reality.

Love how the author eliminate reductive reasoning, while impugning Bacon with Sprat’s treaties or arguing against Descartes.

I couldn’t figure out where the author was going with them but, I am led to the conclusion that yes, God did create two books:

The Great Book of Revelation, which he gave us the Rule & Guide of our Faith and the Book of Nature, which he created so the Universe would operate on certain natural laws of the physical realm, were automatic and repeatable until such time he tires of this little experiment ....LOL

I didn’t find a single thing in this interesting summary of an aspect of the history of science that I as a “teapartier” need to “grapple with”.

However, if there is any group at all that needs to reconcile themselves with the classical notions underlying experimental science it is the anthrowarmists. They have turned science into an intolerant, intemperate, self-absorbed cult.

Remember “The Music Man”, think sleep learning. The most advanced method of learning of “climate change”.

Laura Snyder needs to go back to school and learn how to actually write a coherent thesis. That’s all I have to say.

Life is too short to read something like that.

Science, education, government and journalism has been co-opted by socialists.

Science or dogma at the National Geographic Society?

Battle brewing over NASA funding [Cruz takes on the "greening" of NASA]

John P. Holdren - Obama's Science and Technology Adviser ".......In 1969 Holdren wrote that it was imperative “to convince society and its leaders that there is no alternative but the cessation of our irresponsible, all-demanding, and all-consuming population growth.” That same year, he and professor of population studies Paul Ehrlich jointly predicted: “If … population control measures are not initiated immediately and effectively, all the technology man can bring to bear will not fend off the misery to come.” In 1971 Holdren and Ehrlich warned that “some form of ecocatastrophe, if not thermonuclear war, seems almost certain to overtake us before the end of the century.”

Viewing capitalism as an economic system that is inherently harmful to the natural environment, Holdren and Ehrlich (in their 1973 book Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions) called for “a massive campaign … to de-develop the United States” and other Western nations in order to conserve energy and facilitate growth in underdeveloped countries. “De-development,” they said, “means bringing our economic system into line with the realities of ecology and the world resource situation.” “By de-development,” they elaborated, “we mean lower per-capita energy consumption, fewer gadgets, and the abolition of planned obsolescence.” The authors added:

"The need for de-development presents our economists with a major challenge. They must design a stable, low-consumption economy in which there is a much more equitable distribution of wealth than in the present one. Redistribution of wealth both within and among nations is absolutely essential if a decent life is to be provided for every human being."

On another occasion, Holdren, when asked whether Americans would "need to reduce their living standards," said:

"I think ultimately that the rate of growth of material consumption is going to have to come down, and there’s going to have to be a degree of redistribution of how much we consume, in terms of energy and material resources, in order to leave room for people who are poor to become more prosperous.".....................

I read the entire thing and conclude that whoever came up with the title probably didn’t.

It looks like more excerpt than thesis.

From wiki: Francis Bacon stated that he had three goals: to uncover truth, to serve his country, and to serve his church.

He had the exact opposite goals of libtardism. Almost all the great white men of history are, by any rational assessment, Tea Partiers.

“Laura Snyder needs to go back to school and learn how to actually write a coherent thesis. That’s all I have to say.”

I agree. It was a rather pointless attempt to make a point
that has been originally established as pointless. I say
it’s a failed attempt at a John Roberts pretzel logic trick.

I can hardly believe the author actually published this. What is wrong with her? I am not impressed. The body of the text does not relate to the title.

This is actually an argument from authority, which, of course, is considered a logical fallacy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_authority

She cites the history of the Royal Society, essentially saying (in so many, many, many words): How dare you challenge us, we are SCIENTISTS! We have a history of accomplishment! Evidence to the contrary, if we say it is so, it is a settled matter!”

I agree with another poster, that the title does not relate to the text and, if actually chosen by the author, is rather sophomoric.

: )

I think so - or she just expected that readers would give up (in light of her “scholarly brilliance” and all those awards, etc.) and accept the premise of the title.

I was thinking the same thing. This is a nice little “copy and paste” tome from her text books, even to using 18th century words that few English speaking folks use in this day. As you said, it’s not even “coherent”.

I agree with your assessment re Lysenkoism WRT the political science of climate change.

Went to Salon to see for myself, and it was exactly as you reported it. And the comments following the article were telling in their own right.

History, and the history of scientific discovery are always fascinating.

Ms Snyder just did the impossible, in a mere 2000 words, made the most fascinating period of discovery, a tangled and boring mess.
