The Chevy Volt is so quiet that some people forget to to shut it off. That can be dangerous when the the hybrid's gas engine kicks in and the car is parked in your garage. It doesn't happen a lot, but General Motors is aware of two incidents when carbon monoxide buildup caused problems. It issued a recall Thursday of 64,186 Volts from model years 2011-2013. Owners can bring the car in for a software update that will ensure that it automatically shuts off after idling for an hour and a half. Newer models already have that fix, a spokesman said. All the Volts already sound warnings if the car is left running. It even honks at you. But apparently it's not enough of a warning sometimes.

"Hey dummy, turn your damn car off!"
Another good thing about a car that requires a key in the ignition.
The Chevy volt is a hybrid with a gasoline engine? I didn’t know that. I thought it was a pure electric car.
It haaas always been a hybrid. That is why range is not an issue for it.
Hi, we’re from Government Motors and we’re here to help your car.
Two incidents, causing 65,000 units to be recalled. That's government for you!
The lawsuit against GM from one case could come to a lot more is my guess. Me thinks the problem is a lot bigger than Government Motors is letting on.
Only thing surprising here is that 65,000 volts have been sold.
Why, there’s nothing here that eleven or twelve billion more taxpayer dollars couldn’t fix.
Well, that seems like the entirety of the fleet they’ve sold thus far and even that number is probably inflated...
64,000 Chevy Volts...how much is that in normal Volts?
“That can be dangerous when the the hybrid’s gas engine kicks in and the car is parked in your garage.”
Huh, no CO problem if Leaf owners leave the car on but it raises an interesting question: Are Leaf owners leaving their cars on and killing their batteries? Tesla?
The drivers have the problem, not the cars in this case...................
Every Chevy Volt on the planet...?
It might be easier to just start requiring that prospective buyers score above 75 on a standard IQ test.
Of course, considering their target demographic, such a requirement would put a SERIOUS damper on sales.
Last month I took in one of my cars for the annual Virginia state safety inspection. The guy pulls the car into the garage, then comes in and tells me that it already failed.
The reason? Faulty clutch safety switch.
My reply: “It’s a 1969 Volkswagen!!!! It doesn’t have a clutch safety switch!! People in 69 were smart enough to know not to start the car without pushing in the clutch.”
He asked me to come out and help with the inspection.
BTW, I did a 2 year restoration on that car, I know every millimeter of it.
That still seems like a long time to sit idling. Plenty of time to fill a garage and house with CO.
You beat me to it. Bet the government owns more than half of them.
If you register it as an antique you won;t have to get it inspected any more.
