Ukraine crisis: Inside the Mariupol base of the controversial Azov battalion
ABC News Australia ^ | 3-12-2015 | Nicholas Lazaredes

The first thing you notice as you walk through the corridors of the Azov battalion's base in Mariupol are the swastikas.

There are many — painted on doors, adorning the walls and chalked onto the blackboards of this former school, now temporary headquarters for the Azov troops.

It is a confronting sight and when I query the young soldier assigned to show me around he is quick to correct me, pointing out that the symbol is in fact a "modified swastika" — more like the letter N crossed with a straight line.

When I point to another symbol of the Third Reich etched on the wall, that of Hitler's "SS", he simply shrugs and says: "We are nationalists, but we are not Nazis."

The Azov battalion is a highly controversial Ukrainian paramilitary group that has drawn much criticism for its links to the far right.

The imagery it has chosen to adopt hardly helps to allay concerns, but for my young guide it is a non-issue.

"Some journalists prefer to present us as Nazis. They look for any chance to discredit our regiment," he said.

This the third "Mainstream" Media article I have seen on Azov in the last few days. Yesterday's was from USA Today, which can't be posted on FR.

It's like, after a full YEAR, Western Mainstream Media reporters have suddenly discovered the Azov/RightSector Nazi's. Azov, and the Kolomoiski-controlled "Donbas" mercenary battalions are said to have committed a bunch of war crimes, mostly against Donbas civilians, in the civil war, including by Amnesty International.

One company even calls itself "SS-Dirlewanger". If you know any WW2 history, you've got to know how bad that is, and how shocking it is they are celebrating it.

These "independent Battalions, some 20-35 of them, are not under the control of the Ukrainian Army High Command, but are loosely under Avakov's "Interior Ministry", if they chose to follow the orders they give, which isn't often, it seems.

Until a few months ago, they answered only to Andriy Parubiy, the "Fatherland Party" "Social Nationalist" head of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine. The article doesn't mention Right Sector's Dimitry Yarosh for some reason, but he is associated with them, as well.

“We are nationalists, but we are not Nazis.”

This is a slander. They are not Nazi. They are socialists with a nationalist point of view, that just happen to use old Hindu and Native American symbols.
In fact, they are probably Ukrainian hipsters and are using Nazi symbols ironically!

And as usual, regardless of their politics, they will be considered “far right” just for the use of nazi emblems even though the far right in europe is not that far right at all.

The sale of Hitler’s Mein Kampf has been forbidden in Germany for 70 years. Now suddenly, its OK. What is behind it?? I foresee problems coming to western and eastern Europe. They are beating the war drums in the east. LOL, white folks seem to like destroying themselves. They haven’t learned anything yet, so what’s a few more million lives. The Russians like to flex their muscles, all they need is an excuse, maybe not. The Russians obviously love tweaking the Ukrainian noses and branding them as Nazis. Ukrainians, I guess have had it with Russia from the times of the Czar, the USSR and up to Putin’s reign. If they are playing Nazi, its more to irk Putin, which is like asking for it.

Isn’t Yarosh pretty much out of commission? Last pic I saw of him he was flat in hospital bed. R arm in cast and metal frame attached to elbow. Looks like months of rehab for him. Also stated he had “other injuries.” Head wound visible.

“Isn’t Yarosh pretty much out of commission?”

He has made the headlines in the last couple of weeks, by:

1) Very publicly denouncing the Minsk-2 agreement, saying that he and his Nazi’s have no intention of honoring it, which they have proven with repeated attacks on Shirokino, and near Donetsk airport.

2) One of his Lt.’s, Melnychuk, was involved in another brawl in the Ukrainian Rada a few days ago, in which he threatened to kill those who dare to disagree with them.

It turns out that the Hindu swastika has the “trailers” aiming the opposite way as the Nazi swastika. The meaning of this is that (for the Hindus) the two forces of life (Shiva and Shakti) come together and spinning, represent Life. The Nazi symbol is spinning the opposite way and represents death.

Apparently, the KGB has activated their media whores to spread the “Nazi” BS and their FR whores redistribute the garbage, as usual.

“Just months after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Nick moved to Moscow, where he established a TV production company, traveling extensively in Russia, Latvia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan reporting for television current affairs programs in Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Later, Nick was the first foreigner to establish a permanent market presence in Russia’s virgin television industry - distributing television programs from Australia, Britain and the United States to TV networks throughout Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent states.”
