Target layoffs: 1,700 Twin Cities jobs; 1,400 open jobs eliminated
pioneer press ^ | 3-11-15 | Tom Webb and Katie Kather

The young Target Corp. employee was told to come to a meeting. The elevator was filled with co-workers crying. That's when she knew her job was gone. "It's crazy that this was my dream, and it was ripped away from me," the woman, who did not give her name, said Tuesday morning through tears. "It's such a great company. That's the worst part." On a grim day at Target's Minneapolis headquarters, the retailer laid off 1,700 corporate workers and eliminated an additional 1,400 open positions. The layoffs left Target with about 11,300 Twin Cities corporate employees, down from 13,000 when the day began. Starting soon after 9 a.m., the first laid-off employees began emerging from the headquarters tower on Nicollet Mall. Then groups came out in waves, some people in tears, many with boxes. Combined with the 550 layoffs announced in January, Tuesday's cuts mean 3,650 Target corporate jobs have disappeared this year, the great majority from the Twin Cities. Tuesday's layoffs -- about 13 percent of the Twin Cities headquarters workforce -- seemed to touch most departments, sweeping through every Target corporate building in Minnesota and affecting employees ranging from newcomers to longtime veterans.

Walmart is hiring..

Just saying ;)

(they pay better to)

Mark Dayton (yes, from the Dayton family that started target) is trying to bail them out with state money as we speak.

Time for a new dream, young lady. Perhaps a self-employment dream?

It’s been the way of the corporate world for decades. Stock price a little low? Announce large scale layoffs, feed the analysts some optimistic cost savings, and sit back and watch the price soar.

Why should Target be bailed out? They're another company that lost their way and serve no useful purpose.

When they first gained popularity, they had high-quality merchandise at substantially lower prices. Last time I walked through, that uniqueness seemed to have disappeared.

We’ve visited the new Target store nearby.
Hardly ever see anyone shopping...

I've been to Target a couple of times but I'm more of a Kohl's shopper.

I don’t think they should. Target is a Dayton family baby. It might take a trip to his trust in South Dakota but Mark Dayton should be getting his own money to help Target out.

Target stores tend to have a better look to them (I think it is because I like red over blue?) than walmart, but walmart is still kicking their ass.

Fails:

Women’s clothes are for teenagers or skinny young adults.

Prices are usually higher than Walmart.

They remodeled to add a grocery section with very little selection and higher prices than Walmart.

On the other hand, I don’t see many fat ghetto babes in our Target.

Target’s target may have been Super Wal Mart.
Since we already have five grocery stores and two Wal Mart stores, there’s no room to develop a following...

Target’s target may have been Super Wal Mart.

In this layoff Target's target is its stock price and their desire to bump that up.

I never quite understand it. If you lay off 1700 employees and the company is better off for it, what were those 1700 people doing. Hangin’ at the water cooler? Who hired the 1700 duds in the first place?

How many of those being laid off are radical left wingers who voted for Emir Obozo at least twice, and will vote for their 2016 left wing candidates?

When Emir Obozo was running in his first election to be Emir Potus, a daughter of maybe the last old democrats got married.

She, at that time was in middle Target home office management in Minnesocold.

Dozens of her co workers came to the wedding. Many wore Obozo/Biden pins. We learned very quickly to avoid any time talking to these warriors for Obozo.

Since the marriage, this young woman and her husband have returned to this area. Slowly, they are becoming old type democrats like their parents. My wife noticed that they haven’t gone back to Target land since they left years_ago.

When ever, ardent/vocal Obozo supporters lose their jobs, our cold logic is “You are getting what you voted for!”

Unfortunately, anyone who has worked with Target HQ has known this was going to happen for a long time. They have meetings to determine the next meetings and "collaboration" has been a big part of the Target culture.

Unfortunately, this has also meant whole teams of people not making decisions. Couple that with the over-confidence in their market position they demonstrated over the past five years means this was coming.

Target was bloated. They had buildings full of people not "doing" much. This cut was coming. Unfortunately, some good people were cut. They'll be hired quickly by others. For the rest, I'm sure Mark Dayton, with all his business success and success as governor will have a plan. Or not. Considering MN is last in private employer growth, has seen a number of large companies go through massive, albeit unreported layoffs, and Medtronic LEFT the state and country to get out of huge corporate tax rates.

I've worked with Target for years. I found them very difficult to work with and the lack of decision making was stunning. Wal-Mart, in comparison, made decisions, didn't string along vendors and suppliers and has always dealt fairly in their negotiations. They understand they will only be successful if their suppliers are profitable as well.
