Blacks had left the GOP in 1936.
In the presidential election the year before Selma, the democrats had won 94% of the black vote.
Ike was the last Republican candidate to get a significant % of the black vote.
Eisenhower did pretty well with a number of anti-republican voting blocks as an incumbent, some polls say that he won the Catholic vote in 1956, and he did win 39% of the black vote.
He didn’t come close to winning the black vote though.
I need your source. I have been trying to find a source to that effect for months. This is the time when FDR introduced socialist programs and I have been trying to find proof that this is what happened to buy the votes of not only Blacks but many other people as well. All I have found hearsay that Blacks did not leave the Party until the late sixties - early seventies. I had a feeling that this was wrong. YOUR SOURCE PLEASE!
The black switch was instant and permanent, they were republican voting up to 1936, with 23% going for FDR in 1932, then they flipped over and gave FDR 71% in 1936.

Not that it matters much, but is there any record of the way Blacks voted from 1924-1932 that you know of?
Remember that whether you can successfully explain to someone why they switched, one thing that no one can deny, is that we have never seen anything like it.
Something was clearly communicated so thoroughly, that it reached almost all the blacks of 1930s America, a message so clear, so strong, and so successfully disseminated, that it resulted in a complete and instant reversal of the black vote.
Remember that also when people try to explain some voting group that votes a certain way, by claiming that it “takes many generations to change”, “traditions from the old country”, “parents/grandparents”, “discrimination” etc.
Most excellent advice, as well as the rest you gave. I will remember this. Who knows, maybe a book will come out of this. I'm finishing up my bachelor's degree and going for my Master's in Social/Political Science at liberty U. I've done quite a bit of writing in the courses and It has actually become fun to do.
Now THAT is interesting.
Perhaps you can work on a couple of short articles as you collect information and thoughts for a book.
All those cops who did the beating were DEMOCRATS! So was the mayor of Selma and the Governor of the state.
I just might do that and post them as Vanity’s here. I’ll keep you posted if or when I do (more when than if).
