Netanyahu: Bar Ilan Speech is Dead

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu declared Sunday that the 2009 Bar Ilan speech in which he voiced support for a demilitarized Palestinian state is no longer relevant.

The Friday brochure Olam Katan that was distributed at synagogues this Sabbath asked the parties running for election where they stood on the idea of establishing a Palestinian state.

Deputy Minister Tzipi Hotovely replied to the brochure in the name of Likud, and said that “The Prime Minister has announced to the public that the Bar Ilan speech is null and void. Netanyahu's entire political biography is a struggle against a Palestinian state.”

Following the publication in Olam Katan and ensuing queries by reporters, Likud's Election Staff said that “Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that in the situation that has formed in the Middle East, any territory that is vacated will be taken up by extremist Islam and the Iran-backed terror groups. Therefore, there will be no retreats and no concessions – this is simply irrelevant.”

Isn’t that position tied to Sharon, who himself did an about-face (opposition to acceptance) before his stroke? That was at a different stage of nuclear development as well as far as the Iranians go, and I would bet there is some tie in, strategic or otherwise, to that issue as well.

Arik did an about face when his son/bag man got caught, and he feared the investigation would lead to him. He does an about face, embraces the two-state solution, and the investigation into his son’s corruption is forgotten, and Arik’s praised by the Left, following up with one of the nastiest mass expulsions since Chevron was made Judenrein by the British after 1929. They must have really had the goods on Arik.

I had no prior information on his son’s involvement. The way it was told to me was that Sharon made a tactical decision to go with that previously opposed resolution.

There was also a time, and my memory may be wrong, when Sharon had to militarily remove settlers in the Sinai — which he politically opposed but followed the commands of the then current government.

Thanks for that additional information. Puts an entirely different coloration on things.
