How Air-Traffic Controllers Sound When They Have to Close the Airport [LaGuardia]
The Atlantic via Government Executive ^ | March 5, 2015 | James Fallows

It's obviously good news that no one appears to have been hurt when a Delta Air Lines flight skidded off a runway this morning at LaGuardia airport. Here's an aspect of the whole process I find enlightening:

Reader and aviation buff Ari Ofsevit sent a link to the LiveAtc.net recording of transmissions from the LaGuardia control tower while the episode was underway. It's not embeddable, but you can listen to an MP3 of the recording if you click here. A listener's guide to what you'll hear:

This is very interesting. For non flyers like myself it illustrates radio etiquette. You know they want to say ‘whaddya mean the airport’s closed? I have a plane load of people ready to go.. Have the de-icers here ready to finish up. I can SEE my runway is totally clear”

He says what ever he’s thinking in 3 seconds. The car driver is a little more chatty and with a bit of inflection.

The controller has to just clarify repetitively, as it is going to affect his day in a huge way.

then the pilot just verifies, not wanting to add drama, knowing he has to land in Ohio somewhere but he’s not going to be a burden on the LaGuardia controller.

Then the ‘...leaking FUEL?’ just to clarify.

So interesting to see people manage crises with logic and protocol

At first the tower didn’t even know the plane had skidded off the runway. Another pilot radioed the tower and said “you have a plane that has gone through the barrier” The tower was like “what?” and then the pilot of the other plane repeated that the plane was off the runway, through the barrier and almost in the water. At that point the tower told him to go into a holding pattern and he said basically duh we are already doing it.

The article was from “Government Executive” ... Which is prejudiced obviously ..

For example, of the first three comments, ALL curse Reagan’s air traffic controller response to that union’s ILLEGAL shutdown .... now some 30+ years ago!

Also, they (the Government Executive editors) offer another article “praising” Obola’s DOJ for offering millions of federal employees support in a lawsuit against a government shutdown. Gee would that be political-pressure?

My first words would be, "ah sh!t!" But, I'm not an air traffic control professional.

The RVR (Runway Visual Range) was 4500’. I am not sure of the position of the tower but it is very possible the controller could not see the plane. Happens all the time in low visibility weather.

Yes I’m sure that was the problem. The tower couldn’t see that it had gone off the runway but the pilot in the air could.

"A ground vehicle, "Car 100," checks in with the tower to say that there's a problem." It wasn't an airborne plane that reported the problem it was an airport vehicle.

Mr. GG2 a former pilot was listening to an audio tape of the tower and a pilot of an airborne jet who was telling them that they had a plane off the runway and through the barrier. But it may be that they were hearing it from several sources at the same time.

Was Mr. GG2 Commercial or GA? I have and am still doing investigations for the FAA for 36 years at D10 TRACON (DFW). I just got finished with N555SF (BE35) and am working on N441TG (C441) both fatal accidents. I fill the accident reports make the tapes, replays, do the transcripts from the air traffic side. The information provided says nothing about it being spotted from the air. If there was another frequency it was reported on let me know and I will verify it for you. It’s what I do.

I don’t know what freq it was on but Mr. GG2 listened to a tape from the plane that was lined up for approach behind the jet that crashed. He was talking to the tower not air traffic control. Mr. GG2 was commercial in CA. Freight hauler not passenger.

What’s funny about that video clip from “Airplane” is that you can now clearly see that he is jumping through a window made of plastic wrap.
