HOBARTIANS could be excused for thinking winter had come early today, waking up to a snow-capped Mt Wellington.
At 8am, the temperature at the summit was a chilly minus 1.8 degrees, with the apparent temperature a teeth-rattling minus 13.2.

A tad early for Tasmania.
I’m just hoping that the winter exists the northern hemisphere. We are going to be picking up an extra hour of daylight this Saturday so hopefully the melting of all this snow and ice will finally commence!
7 in of snow this AM in Tx
10°C (50°F) in Calgary today and tomorrow. Supposed to be 55°F Sunday and Monday. If this is global warming, I love it!
It turns out that “Global Warming” was too specific, too easy to refute. So let's all use “Climate Change” instead. That covers any weather abnormality of any kind, no matter how slight.
Leaves turning in New England a week too early? Climate change! We must regulate all industry in New England!
More rainfall than average in Norway? Climate change! We must regulate all industry in Norway!
Been there a number of times, the island is similar to the Northwest. Used to be a whaling center.
I live in the Florida Panhandle. I was sitting next to the window early this afternoon when a strong wind began to blow. I have an indoor/outdoor thermometer.
the temperature dropped from 76 to 58 in less than 10 minutes. In another 20 minutes it dropped to 50. Then it warmed up to 54 but will drop to the low 40s tonight.
Yep. 4” on my side of the Metroplex.
It is supposed to be cold in Calgary!
Yeah we’re finally going to start seeing some signs of spring next week in Michigan. Cold right now at 9 degrees F.
I would love to see Tasmania.
Bit thicker over to the east.
Ever had Tasmanian potatoes?
Uuuuuuhhhh, so that’s why they do the time change...who knew?
I really liked Hobart. We went to the peak of Mt. Wellington (narrow dirt road, sheer cliffs what’s not to love). I was quite surreal there, looking down at jets coming in for a landing. We watched as the fog enveloped the communication tower up there.
Yes, I’m really looking forward to it. They spring forward for a reason. So that we get that extra hour at end of day to help melt all the ice and snow. If they added the hour in the morning, it wouldn’t melt anything because the sun isn’t up then.
About the only complaint I had about Alberta when I moved here from Ontario was that the weather is so unusual. While there are plenty of negative things to be said about Ontario, at least you know that summer is summer in the summer time and winter is winter in the winter time. In Calgary you never know! I recall a Stampede (July) when it snowed! The snow didn’t accumulate on the ground but what fell from the sky was snow not rain!
Living so close to the mountains leads to some very strange weather and very quick changes. In 1962 in Pincher Creek Alberta, the temperature went from -19°C to 22°C (-2°F to 72°F) in one hour! Chinooks also occur in the Great Plains of the US. The 24 hour record for temperature increase is held by Loma, Montana, where it went from -54°F to 49°F. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, in 1943 it went from -4°F to 45°F in TWO MINUTES, courtesy of a Chinook! After the Chinook ended, the temperature dropped from 54°F to -4°F in 27 minutes!
Yes, but Tasmania is still technically in Summer. They are as far (south 40+ degrees) as Pennsylvania is North.
If we had sub freezing cold in early September in Pennsylvania, it would indeed be a big story.
Horrifying.
