Tensions over Ukraine continue to build despite ceasefire.

Russian fighter jets are practicing attacking NATO ships in the Black Sea in another dramatic sign that tensions over Ukraine continue to build despite a fragile ceasefire agreed last month.

“Russia’s newest Su-30 fighter jets and Su-24 attack bombers are using two NATO ships in the Black Sea to practice penetrating anti-air systems,” reports Sputnik, citing a source at the Sevastopol naval base.

Asserting that the NATO ships are conducting drills based around “repelling air attacks,” Moscow is taking the opportunity to practice “maneuvering and conducting aerial reconnaissance” outside the range of the ships in order to “practice attack scenarios”.

It’s clearly an overture for a peace deal! They want to be friends.

If Russia orchestrated a coup in Mexico and tried to get them to reclaim the Southwest, do you think we'd buzz some Russian warships in the Gulf of Mexico?

The Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits is a 1936 agreement that gives Turkey control over the Bosporus Straits and the Dardanelles and regulates the transit of naval warships. The Convention gives Turkey full control over the Straits and guarantees the free passage of civilian vessels in peacetime. It restricts the passage of naval ships not belonging to Black Sea states.

We didn't patrol the Black Sea during the Cold War, even though we happily buzzed Russian trawlers on the open seas for following our ships.

Even the Nazis didn't break the The Montreux Convention. They had to work with the shipping they could commandeer from their Black Sea vassals.

So USS Yorktown and USS Caron weren’t really in the Black Sea in 1986 and again in 1988 when they were ‘bumped’?

“If Russia orchestrated a coup in Mexico and tried to get them to reclaim the Southwest, do you think we’d buzz some Russian warships in the Gulf of Mexico?”

1. The United States did not organize a coup in the Ukraine.

2. The only coup which occurred in the Ukraine were those coups conducted by Russia during the past 20 years to put Yanukovych in office through the use of massive vote fraud and other corruption.

3. No, the United States would not violate the standard rules of engagement with Russian warships during peaceful relations, because doing so would result in unintended risk of an incident of naval conflict and a war. The current Russian actions serve as dangerous provocations outside the scope of the well understood standard rules of engagement.

4. Imperial Germany and Imperial Japan previously attempted to enlist Mexico as an ally against the United Stats with a promise of restoring the American Southwest territories to Mexican dominion in return for basing their armies in Mexico. The United States exercised restraint in those cases by establishing a U.S. Naval base for a destroyer squadron at San Diego to overwatch Magdalena Bay in Baja California and conducted the Mexico 1916-1917 14 March 1916-7 February 1917 in addition to the earlier cavalry patrols along the Mexican border searching for German spies and Japanese Army patrols.

fragile ceasefire agreed

What ceasefire? What "fragile" ceasefire agreed by whom? Did anyone bother to tell Ukraine and Russia?

“This was before the coup.”

The only coups to occur in the Ukraine were the coups organized by the Russian intelligence services to put their agent, Yanukovych, and others into their offices using massive vote fraud, kidnapping, torture, and assassination. Months before Yanukovych ordered more killings of his corrupt administration’s political opponents, Russia planned and later executed an invasion, occupation, and conquest of the Ukraine’s territories in the Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.

Senator John McCain and other Americans supported the lawfuloly elected Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, and their supporters among the citizens of the Ukraine to assert the rule of law under the Ukrainian Constitution and international law. When the foreign Russian agents failed to derail the protestor movement for prosecution and punishment of the Yanukovych Administration’s corruption, they ordered Yanukovych to deny his resignation and abandonment of his office and duties to provide a false excuse for the Russian conquest of the Ukraine planned months before the protests occurred in the Ukraine. The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada was and still is the lawfully elected government of the Ukraine, and they have not been overthrown in a coup. Yanukovych was not overthrown in a coup either, because he resigned his office as he had done once before. Yanukovych and his Russian masters can attempt to dispute his resignation with the Ukrainian Constitutional Court, but they failed to do so because they already know he resigned and defected to a hostile foreign state, Russia, thereby committing treason against the Ukraine in addition to his prior acts of treason and murder.

Well Gunslinger, at least you and I get it.

A year ago Putin was gradually drawing the Ukraine back into the Russia sphere. If he had succeeded no one would have died and Russia would have acquired a huge, poor country with few export possibilities and an unproductive population.

Obama's response was to stage a coup, installing an American puppet to run the country. Today's situation is a result of that decision. Another Obama VICTORY in foreign affairs!

You are wrong on many counts.

We’ll jump over your implying that we interfered in Russia’s natural right to a Ukrainian puppet state, and go straight to the issue of the treaty.

Non-Black Sea states are not prohibited entry to the Black Sea by the treaty. No more than nine non-Black Sea state warships, with a total aggregate tonnage of no more than 30,000 tons, may pass at any one time, and they are permitted to stay in the Black Sea for no longer than twenty-one days.

During the Cold War, we regularly sent destroyers and frigates into the Black Sea.

I guess those stupid Ukrainians would rather be free.

Same applies to us you know. If we hadn’t had so many issues with Britain, Germany, and communism think how many lives would have been saved. Being someone else’s serf is a small price to pay for keeping the peace in estimation.

“We didn't patrol the Black Sea during the Cold War, even though we happily buzzed Russian trawlers on the open seas for following our ships.”...

I served aboard a U.S. Navy cruiser back in the 50’s. Part of our cruise was to visit the city of Istanbul, Turkey. As we departed the Straits of the Dardanelles, we were dogged by a Russian submarine for several days out into the Mediterranean. None of our aircraft were able to “buzz” that sub even though we knew it was there. The presence of a few U.S. Destroyers (our newly arrived escorts) eventually convinced the sub to back off.

...Seriously !!!...Look , why didn’t they practice these drills when we had six aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf at the same time ?. Mother Russia it seems woke up one morning with 36 , that’s right , thirty six nuclear submarines at its front door , it crumbled !.
Then Berlin Wall fell and Mother Russia fell apart, and, shortly afterwards George W. Bush invited the leader of North Korea to a Bar B Q , and no , this was not a dinner invitation.
The timeline and past events cannot be undone by anyone and to assume otherwise is a masturbatory exercise of great futility....My numbers are right and my words are true...........”Tighten UP” !!!
