I think faking a kidnapping is a felony in some states. In any case, it should be.

Falsely claiming such a serious thing can result in innocent people being hurt or killed.

It always results in wasted resources responding to a false call. As it stands, how is it like to have to respond as a firefighter to a non-existent fire, or a cop to a nonexistent crime? It’s a waste of resources on its own, and start praying that there isn’t a real distress call while you respond to a fake one. I agree, it should be a serious enough crime to send people to jail.
