Minnesota handgun permits down, after 2013 spike

The number of handgun permits newly issued or renewed in Minnesota in 2014 dropped after a spike the year before, according to an annual report released Monday by the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Sheriff's offices statewide reported that about 41,500 permits were issued last year. Here's what the numbers look like over the past five years: The year 2014 had 41,493; 2013 had 60,471; 2012 had 31,657; 2011 had 20,772; and 2010 had 17,240. About 1,800 people who applied in 2014 did not receive a permit. Of those, 422 were denied; about 1,300 more are pending. A handful of others were suspended, voided, revoked or canceled. Most permits are issued for five years. New permits outnumbered renewals in 2014 by about three to one. The top permit-issuing counties were the state's most populous. Hennepin County led the way, with about 5,300 permits issued, followed by Anoka, Dakota, Ramsey and St. Louis.

Perhaps that is because they make it quite inconvenient to apply for the permit.

Smith & Wesson’s Value is Fully Loaded

By
Spencer Jakab

March 2, 2015

Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. has been engaging in a bit of target practice recently.

In late January, less than two weeks before the end of its fiscal third quarter, the gun maker said the period would likely see stronger revenue and earnings than previously expected. Management raised revenue guidance to a range of $124 million to $126 million from an earlier view of $113 million to $118 million.

The uninitiated might guess the sales decline had something to do with regulation of firearm sales or perhaps public revulsion after a high-profile shooting. The opposite seems to be the case: People rushed out to buy guns fearing tighter gun laws were coming, moving up purchases that probably would have happened anyway.

And a lot of people are denied who should not be, but don’t have a lawyer and cannot afford one who specializes in 2A case law as it applies to MN statutes.

Permits are good for 5 years. Over the latest 5 years about 172K were issued, so it’s about 3% of the population. Most CCW states are around that.

It sounds like all those permits issued in 2013 have the people there feeling a lot safer.

I’m from Wisconsin and took the MN CC class intending to apply for a MN permit in addition to the WI permit.

MN permits must be applied for in person to a County Sheriff and must be paid in cash $100.

In Wisconsin, I filled out the form, mailed it to Madistan, and had my permit 8 days later.

They also claim in the article there were no defensive uses made in the year.

“brandishing” is using, but often not a statistical factor as it often goes unreported.

I was able to get the Utah permit when Wisconsin didn’t allow them. Now, per Utah regulation, if your state allows concealed carry, you must first acquire your state’s permit. Only then will Utah give you one. And, in most cases, the Utah permit is somewhat more involved, requiring fingerprints, a photo, a background check (of course) and training by a certified Utah permit instructor.

The compliant sheeple already have their permits. Everybody else has realized that they aren’t relevant. I still have yet to see where anybody got a permit so they could commit a crime.

Michigan only recognizes Utah permits for Utah residents. It does not recognize the non-resident permits from any other state.
