I think that ISIS, Boko Haram and the Hebdo outrage may have presented a crack in the wall where even a surprising number of leftist/liberals just cannot deny that this has something to do with Islam. I think Graeme Wood’s publication in the notoriously hard liberal Atlantic was an eye opener too. Granted, too many will still insist until they are blue in the face that Obama is by far the best man for the job and label you an ignorant buffoon if you object to this. And so they remain very much part of the problem and on a fundamental level they still are the problem. But I have discussed with numerous intellectuals who now say they cannot deny the link with islam anymore, and I’m in academia.
