Closing arguments heard at Arab American Marine's court-martial

Disillusioned with the Marine Corps and fearing he would die in combat, an Arab American Marine deserted his unit in Iraq in 2004 and fled to his native Lebanon, a Marine prosecutor told a court-martial Friday. Hassoun's lawyer told a military judge Friday that Hassoun was captured by insurgents and held for 17 days before a tribal sheik negotiated his release.

Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, who disappeared from a military camp in Iraq a decade ago and eventually turned up with family in Lebanon was charged Friday with desertion and other charges.

Marine, declared a 2-time deserter, turns himself in

Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, who has been declared a deserter on two separate occasions, has turned himself in to U.S. custody, a spokesman for the Marines has confirmed.

Marine who went missing in Iraq is set for U.S. return

Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun spent four days at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, undergoing what military physicians called repatriation and debriefing.

Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun was an unhappy Marine.

At his base in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004, he complained about an extended deployment and refused to perform certain duties, according to fellow Marines. He longed to be with the Lebanese woman — his cousin — he'd wed in an arranged marriage.

A military prosecutor said Hassoun, a native of Lebanon and a naturalized U.S. citizen, warned his comrades: "I'll leave and go to Lebanon. I'm not kidding."

Why are Moslems allowed in the US Armed Forces?

Would we have allowed Bushido Japanese into our Armed Forces in WWII?

Deserted twice? Article 85 UCMJ calls for punishment In time of war: Death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.
Such other punishment always includes dishonorable discharge. No second chance.
