The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) terms the current measles outbreak in the U.S. as “large multi-state outbreak.” Discussion has permeated everywhere from traditional news media to commentary and pop culture websites.
At 141 cases and growing, the incidence of measles is widely considered serious enough to prompt discussions about strengthening laws and changing policies. Reaction has ranged from alarmed to near-hysterical.
Yet commiserate attention has not been paid to a much more widespread and mysterious infectious disease outbreak in the U.S.: one that also originated in California. In contrast to the measles outbreak, which so far has no associated deaths, this outbreak has claimed 14 lives: Most of them children.
What is the outbreak that has failed to make headlines, despite its reach and fatality rate?
It’s the polio-like enterovirus EV-D68 that can cause severe respiratory illness. It has also been potentially linked to dozens of debilitating cases of paralysis.
CDC and medical experts state that measles is very dangerous: for every 1,000 cases of measles there will be approximately 2 deaths. But the death risk among serious cases of EV-D68 may be several fold greater: at least 14 associated deaths reported among 1,153 cases.
The CDC says it cannot explain why this particular form of enterovirus has surged to such an unusual degree in the U.S. The CDC also states that it has been unable to pinpoint its origin.
Below is a side-by-side comparison of the “large” measles outbreak and the largely unnoticed EV-D68/paralysis outbreak.

If the measles outbreak is “large,” then the size and impact of the much larger EV-D68/paralysis outbreak would seemingly merit a great deal of attention. It leads to the question: why isn’t it being addressed with the same interest and vigor?
To date, the CDC has not responded properly to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request filed on December 14, 2014 about the EV-D68 outbreak. (Federal FOI law requires a response within the 20 business days).

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

I read someplace recently that that is exactly where it came from.
There is no definitive link between EV68 and the polio-like paralysis. However, EV68 and poliovirus do share some biological similarities, so the link is very plausible. If a link is established, this makes EV68 more dangerous than polio. 94/1153 is approximately an 8% paralysis rate; polio only caused paralysis in 0.5% of cases.

I'm sure there are a few reasons for this. For one thing, measles is one of the most contagious diseases known. You can catch measles by entering a room 2 hours after someone who isn't even sick yet has been there. (Measles is contagious for up to 4 days before symptoms appear.) No amount of good hygiene will protect you from measles, but an easily available vaccine will. There is no vaccine for EV68, but it is also not as contagious.

I am not sure what information is supposed to be revealed by the CDC that isn't already public (except for things like patient identifying data). The fact that the news media have not picked up on this outbreak is not the fault of the CDC. Blame, instead, an exotic disease in Africa for grabbing all of the attention.

We don’t allow cattle to enter without a background health and ancestry check which we also reqiure of legal immigrants who wait years and still go thru health and record checks. We also require that any legal immingrant demonstrate prior to entry that they offer a contribution to our society and not dependency upon it .
Yet we’re letting children and gang bangers in without doing any of this which has resulted in dispersing virulent new diseases (measles) and drug use which has resulted in unreported cases in schools where these illegal kids were placed.. Plus shoved a severe financial strain on local governments where they are placed .
Should any candidate for Attorney General supporting that practice be denied confirmation ?(Yes) (No) .Should those given this bypassed favored treatment who miss their INS hearing be deported fortwith ? In “countries where an American citizen decides to be a “legal” emigree never mind being a seasonal visitor still are denied voting privledges. Own land in their own name.
