“This time period was during the disasterous Jimmy Carter presidency; the nation as a whole was in a collective funk.”

Collective funk understates how bleak things were. There’s been nothing like it until Obama’s disasterous regime.

The miracle on ice was a beacon of light in a very dark time. It invigorated suffering American patriots and felt like the first hope for better times ahead. I do think it helped Reagan in his run for the Presidency.

Well... I'm not so convinced about that. Jimmah didn't have a goose-stepping media and academia behind him, both sides of the aisle were despondent....

And the country wasn't so divided and hyphenated, with poison pen in hand. The general populace was at least at peace with each other for the most part. The enemy was an enemy, and it wasn't your American brethren.

You're absolutely right! I was really young, but I cannot find the right words to describe the depths of bleakness felt.

That Game was truly inspirational and uplifting for our nation.

Something I will never forget.
