FRANKFORT – The discussion turned heated Friday as lawmakers argued on the floor of the Senate over the decision to call members of the chamber into session as the House closed shop the last two-days of the work week because of weather conditions.
Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, defended his decision to bring the Senate back on Thursday saying that he had consulted with experts and decided that it would be safe for Senate members to travel to Frankfort.
“We were on the phone with the state police, getting weather updates to see, were the roads capable and cleared for people to safely travel here,” Stivers said. “They were.”
Stivers also mentioned that many workers in the commonwealth braved the weather conditions to go to their respective jobs.
Senate Minority Leader Ray Jones, D-Pikeville, felt that the safety of senators was compromised by having sessions on Thursday and Friday.
“Now, it’s sub-zero weather out there and members of the General Assembly are going to have to be on the road,” Jones said. “We have until March 30. There was nothing that couldn’t have waited until we got back here on Monday.”
Both the Senate and House are scheduled to reconvene on Monday at 4:00 p.m.

Call them in to pass global warming legislation.
Granted they are a bunch of pussies and whiners, but frankly I wish they’d stay away from Frankfort a lot more regardless of the weather.
Thing I hate about legislators is that they have this fetish for passing laws when they are in session. The idiots don’t understand that not adding more effin laws all the time is a good thing. Time to start passing laws that rescind existing laws.
What in Hell is so damned important that they need to be there this week? 3 months a year and not a day more, IMO.
