Gov. Walker backs push to make Wisconsin right-to-work state

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Gov. Scott Walker, a likely 2016 presidential candidate, announced Friday that he supports a surprise move by legislative leaders to quickly vote next week on a bill that would make Wisconsin a right-to-work state.

Walker had been urging Republicans who control Wisconsin's Legislature to hold off on the issue, saying it would distract from his agenda. But after a series of private meetings with lawmakers, followed by an announcement that the bill would be debated next week, Walker's spokeswoman said Friday that he would sign it.

"Governor Walker continues to focus on budget priorities to grow our economy and to streamline state government," his spokeswoman Laurel Patrick said in an email. "With that said, Governor Walker co-sponsored right-to-work legislation as a lawmaker and supports the policy."

Under right to work, private-sector workers would not be required to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment. Twenty-four other states already have the laws in place.

Walker rose to prominence in 2011, when he pushed through a law known as Act 10 that effectively ended collective bargaining for most public workers. That led to protests involving as many as 100,000 people at the state Capitol and a 2012 recall election that Walker won.

This is why I like Walker.
Both he and Cruz understand you can’t win by playing a defensive game.
Say what you want but action always speaks louder than words.

Imagine a Cruz/Walker ticket (who leads doesn’t really matter).
Palin gets a Cabinet Post
John Bolton get Secretary of State
Lots of good possibilities.

But, but, but, Walker is a liberal rino gop-e!!!!! This can’t be true according to the mentally superior FReepers who keep posting liberal and rino attacks on Walker!

Nobody here doesn't support Walker with respect to what he does on issues like this one.

The problem for many of us is that we don't trust him on immigration, which is arguably the most urgent of the many crises facing the United States.

I like a lot of what I see about Walker, but I cannot support any candidate that is for amnesty. That said, I am not sure what his position on amnesty actually is. He recently said he wasn't for amnesty, but that was all he said.

Like Mark Levin, I need to hear a lot more about his amnesty position before I would trust him enough to vote for him.

Yep. And this is clearly a legislative issue, so it is proper that the legislature should have the lead. Even if they had to be reminded. Unlike Act 10,which was at heart, a budget repair bill that was presented by Gov. Walker to the legislature.

The question needs to be asked - why would anyone oppose the freedom to choose whether to be in a union or not?

Why would it be OK to force union membership on everyone?

You are wrong again.

First, read what Walker says in that Hill interview...not the headline. He made it clear that he does not support amnesty.

Second, the Milwaukee vote was mostly symbolic, but what the article OMITS is the rider that Walker attached to it that says secure the border first and no amnesty.

You see, the details matter.

Walker is being smeared by leftists, RINO’s and FReepers who seem to undermine every decent conservative candidate every cycle....they have a pattern of this. They use liberal sources (who hope to divide us) and posit those as fact.

I am satisfied with Walker’s positions on immigration so far. If he turns left, then I will abandon him.

But I see no reason to undermine him like this.

Couple of things helped move this to the fast track:

Head of the Legislature was original author of RTW so they already had a plan in hand.

Dewey Strobel won a special election this week for the vacant State Senate seat in my area and he was another yes vote for RTW. He was going to be seated in April and it was thought it would lead to a special session.

Senate leader has 17 yes votes now even without Dewey and he said why delay the vote and let the unions et al gin up the numbers for an Act 10 type protest again. Lets do it next week.

Frankly Walker had been a little too non-committal on this issue of late but I agree that he was likely downplaying it.

Another win here for us in Wisconsin.

As a Wisconsin resident, its been amusing reading posts at the board here this week about how much of a GOPe sellout Walker has become.

I should be living in a State wide liberal hell hole at this point with all the heavy breathing and fainting taking place by the Cruz (a guy who I also love) supporters...

“But I see no reason to undermine him like this.”

I had no intention of undermining him. Whether Walker was for “comprehensive immigration reform” at that time or not, I remember being disappointed at his statements, and a lot of others do too. We were all watching people like a hawk then, as now, and we’re all being very cautious.

As I said, I think Walker was just going with the prevailing winds. He should have said something along the lines of “the rule of law is paramount,” but he didn’t, unfortunately, causing the mistrust of him on the issue. He can make it right and has apparently begun to do so.

Frankly the very idea of being force to give a cut of my paycheck to some 3rd part organization that produces nothing but drama and political organization for a party i don’t care for is offensive to any one who had to actually work to earn their buck.

I don’t want no free loading 3rd party organization hijacking my company and a portion of my dollars. That is just criminal and i don’t care what the majority of my coworkers think, its not their company, and if they want to leave they are free to do so at any time.

And after the good folks in Wisconsin are successful in passing RTW, perhaps they can come down to Jeff City and explain the necessity to pass RTW in Missouri! Republicans have a Super-Majority in both Houses, more than enough to override the Dem Governor’s veto, yet some say,”Now is not the right time.” Go figure!

According to local media outlets in Wisconsin, unions plan “rallies” for Tuesday and Wed. Looks like it may be time to schedule Service Master...
