Here in Washington State, a federal court has just ordered the city of Yakima to elect its city council members on a precinct basis, rather than at-large, so as to facilitate Hispanic candidates being elected. (Hispanics are concentrated in a couple of the newly-defined precincts.)

There was no court finding that the former election system was designed to suppress the Hispanic vote, or that Hispanics had in any way been discriminated against. The only rationale for the decision was that since 40% of the city is Hispanic, Hispanics are entitled to some sort of group representation. The judge is an ass.

I read about that and agree, he’s an ass that legislates from the bench.
