feels very much like a low solar cycle outside where I am.....
I was stuck in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in January of 1998 due to an ice storm that ran from New England down into Virginia. The ice was so bad that all the outlet malls and restaurants were closed. The temps were minus 35 windchill, and they were doing rolling blackouts through Pa., to deal with the heavy energy demands. I tried to start my car but it wouldn't turn over. I called AAA to have them come to give me a jump, but the woman told me I wouldn't be able to go anywhere anyway since Route 81 was closed. I ended up having to stay a couple of extra days in a hotel room, and eat cold sandwiches from the diner across the way. The ice was so bad, thick with nothing but ruts, that I wore out the tires I had on my car by the time I got home. Now that was cold.
