BERLIN – Germany's armed forces will come under a new security and defense strategy from 2016, the German government has announced.

Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen announced in Berlin on Tuesday that Germany, which has been traditionally hesitant in taking part in international military operations mainly because of its Nazi past, would act "without any taboos".

And some serious hardware too.

Wondering how they ‘paid the price.’

I do not suggest that the sons pay for the sins of the fathers, just I am uncertain concerning this price paid. It seems rather an empty comment. Is it because time has passed and most of the Nazis are now dead?

I simply do not get the point.

Which member of the European Union is best suited to solving the Mooselimb problem?

Say, the Italians, when ISIS sails across the Mediterranean and invades?

Well besides the real dollars in reparations they have paid out......billions IIRC....there still is some hyper shame amongst many mainstream germans for the sins of the past....

If the WW2 vets from both sides were willing to meet and shake hands and be glad they survived WW2 then that is good enough fo me.....

I didnt have to live it.....but I wont forget....

More and more countries are realizing that they cannot anymore depend on the U.S. for their security. That ISIS is even talking about marching on Rome should wake up everyone.

They have asked for forgiveness, repented. That is enough. Now they must protect themselves as the big dog US has decided we wont. Same for Japan. This life thing is serious business. Heads get cut off. Rules of Engagement cannot be politically acceptable AND personally deadly. That isall they are saying.

They need to make important steps now before desperation sets in and a nutcase with confidence seems like the only viable savior.

We have one of those now, because we failed to engage one another, preferring to guffaw at political correctness and the other side’s imbecillity. We were thus outclassed in converting enough voters. Should have been landslide victories with decent candidates. Your candidate reflects your willingness to engage fellow citizens in genuine discussion. We failed.....I failed miserably and am tired of it, tired enough to change my behavior.

Actually, Russia, though not a member of the EU, is probably the best prospect. They have by far the best track record on their side of the North Pole when it comes to dealing with Mooselimbs, despite having been kicked out of Afghanistan with their tail between their legs.

Also, Angela speaks Rooskie, und Vlad sprecht Deutsch. So, maybe a partnership?

But count Uncle Sam out, its sheeple having voted stupidly in 2008 and 2012.

I've been to Russia.

They are scared sh!tless about German militarism.

For good historical reasons.

agree...generations have grown and passed. The German military of today is more like a job program. Reports of Germans not wanting to “work” if the weather was too cold/hot have been around. The Germans have a long way to go but hopefully they start now.

Actually they have a poor historical record which includes alliances formed with moslems. These errors of judgement in Russian history come back to haunt them in modern times. They are huge numbers of moslems living in Russia. Contrast that to the relatively tiny number of moslems in Poland.
