When I was a kid 100 cases in 14 states would not have been termed an “outbreak” and would not have induced the official panic that we have now.

About 30 percent would experience potentially life-threatening complications. The vaccine program led to a 99 percent reduction in infections, and the disease was declared virtually eradicated in 2000."

This paragraph is a little misleading, although technically correct. However, the rest of the story is that of those 3 - 4 million, 300 - 500 died, or about 0.017% and 1000 had permanent injury, or about 0.033%.
