What irritates me most about this whole "Fifty Shades of Grey" cultural phenomenon is the pretentiousness of it. From what I can tell, it's cheap pornography for bored housewives, the female consumer equivalent of Larry Flynt's publications.

Yet "Fifty Shades of Grey" masquerades as having some kind of literary value, as though it were high art. I'm not saying either it or Larry Flynt's magazines should be illegal, I am saying is that "Fifty Shades of Grey" shouldn't pretend to be anything more than what it is.

I don’t think anybody is calling it high art or saying it has literary value. Even the fans say it’s trash, it’s just trash they enjoy. Nobody is pretending it’s anything. It’s all very upfront about being bad fanfic, just extremely popular bad fanfic.
