ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Sen. Charles Schumer is urging the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make measles shots free and widely available, like the flu vaccine.

Schumer, D-N.Y., made the recommendation Sunday, noting that the CDC says at least 102 people have contracted measles in 14 states, including New York and New Jersey, so far this year. There was a record number of cases last year — 644 in 27 states.

“It’s clear that we need to get on top of this highly contagious disease before it becomes too big for us to control,” Schumer told reporters, including WCBS 880’s Jim Smith.

When the system collapses under the weight of freebies, nobody will get it whether they want it or not.

It’s a well known fact that the most dangerous place in America is between Upchuck Schumer and a TV camera.

Head on down to the clinic for a measles shot...and get the flu.

I was thinking we should make the people bringing it into the country LESS accessible. Like maybe keep them in Mexico....

Being a despicable hypocrite would be an improvement for Chuckie.

It's not unlikely.

A LOB TIME AGO,...When I was first in in school, Mom went with me to register for the first day of school. She had show my shot record and that it was current. If a shot was in need of an update or missing the school nurse gave me it.

There was no opting out of the shots, show them or no school.

They were paid for out of shool funds.

BTW I first went to shool in 1954.

just one vote here but I would not object at all to providing free vaccinations for communicable diseases for anyone who cannot afford the shots and is willing to get them

this is low cost
and
this is something that benefits us all
(communicable diseases are communicable...you never know when or where you’ll catch them....)

best,

It’s already free for the Medicaid crowd. The rest of us are required to have insurance, so what’s the deal Chuck?

I see where this is going.

Somebody wants to get paid whether we want the product or not.

“”this highly contagious disease before it becomes too big for us to control””

That already exists - it’s called CONGRESS!

Big money in the pharma lobby.

Bart Stupak landed himself in exactly the right place after selling America down the river. Drugs, Medical Devices and Biologics are listed among his areas of expertise.

I believe any one can get children’s immunizations free at a clinic in your area already.

I think that is actually a pretty good idea; measles is a terrible disease and it would be a shame for a child to come down with it and infect other children because his parents could not afford to pay for vaccinations. There are a few things that it makes sense for the taxpayers to pay for, and I think vaccinations for deadly childhood diseases is one of them.

Yes, the government paying for measles vaccines would fall under General Welfare of the Constitution.

The saddest part is how quickly some FReepers go full socialist “for our own good”. They don’t ask how much it will cost, how effective it is or if there is any need for more taxpayer funding.

Lower income children have been covered by SCHIP insurance for years. The article does not say so, but I suspect that Schumer is talking about extending medical coverage to illegals.
