Given your childhood years spent in Indonesia, and your friendships then with some Muslims at school and in that country in general,...0bama was registered as a Muslim in that Indonesian school. His stepfather was a Muslim. This author sounds ignorant when he phrases it to sound like 0bama was only acquainted with Muslims by casual contact.
