It is possible that in (mis)using screening procedures some teachers, on purpose or unintentionally, may elicit from students information about firearms stored in their family homes. Such information is none of the teacher's (or other students') business and potentially compromises home security and the safety of the student's family. The parents should be informed when such elicitation is being conducted. In addition school administrators may encourage or pressure teachers or the students themselves to coerce their parents to remove safely-kept firearms from the home.

In order to clarify potential liability of individual teachers, administrators, and the schools, from misuse of screening procedures, concerned parents should present copies of a Physician or Educator Qualifications and Liability Statement to school administrators, teachers and any school-appointed screeners. The Qualifications and Liability Statement provides for a signed acknowledgment that the educator has (or does not have) “a certification, license or formal training in Risk Management” and that the educator has (or has not) “reviewed applicable scientific literature pertaining to defensive gun use, safety, storage, and beneficial results of private firearms ownership.”
