Later this year along the banks of the James River outside Richmond, Virginia, a paper products maker based in northeastern China will begin construction on a new U.S. manufacturing plant. The factory will churn the region's straw and corn stalks into household products including napkins, tissue and organic fertilizerall marked "Made in the USA."
Shandong Tranlin Paper's new U.S. factory is forecast to generate about 2,000 new jobs by 2020, and is the latest Chinese company to invest in American manufacturing.
Chinese foreign direct investment in the U.S. totaled $12 billion last year, topping $10 billion for the second year in a row, according to the Rhodium Group, which tracks Chinese money flows into the U.S. It was three years ago in 2012, whenfor the first time everChinese foreign investment in America lapped investment flows in the other direction to China.

Chinese companies are setting up shop in America.
Everything I buy today is “Made In China.”
We are not even competing with them.
The final straw is Americans are going to work for them.
This is worth the article:
“Known more for low-cost manufacturing and massive shipping containers of cheap toys and textiles, China wants to move up the food chain. China’s gross domestic product for 2014 grew 7.4 percentthe weakest performance in 24 years. As the nation’s economy slows, China wants to push into higher-valued products including pricey construction machinery. But production and sales of higher-margin goods require advanced tech skills and innovation, sometimes more easily achieved outside China, where low-cost production reigns.
And in an ironic twist on offshored American jobs, some Chinese companies are pursuing “Made in USA” branding. “Foreign brands and quality control are increasingly important for China’s affluent middle class,” according to Rhodium’s research.”
The Chinese want to know how to make better things. So they come to learn from us. And middle class Chinese stand to benefit.
Watch Back to the Future. The first movie has the “Doc” of 1955 saying the 1985 stuff broke because it was made in Japan. His 1955 sensibilities told him it was junk.
Back to the Future II has a 2015 Marty working for the Japanese because of our fears at the time the movie was made that they were taking over. Obviously that is not a huge concern now. ;-)
We don’t know how this thing will fully play out, but I’ll throw out an interesting thought: The real money is not in building iPhones. The real money is in designing and selling them. The manufacturing is not a high profit game any more. Heck, a copy of Windows costs a buck or so to make. But that’s not what we’re paying for. We’re paying for all those guys on the Redmond, WA campus.
The Chinese don’t make absolute junk.
That used to be true - same thing with the Japanese.
They’re catching up on quality.
So if you buy everything from China, you must be trying to buy only Chinese.
The Chinese dont make absolute junk.
That used to be true - same thing with the Japanese.
Theyre catching up on quality.
I live near a LOT of TOYOTA factories in Kentucky. I love that both of my Scions were built in Japan. But Japan didn’t end up taking over.
The Chinese are going to run into the very same roadblocks which caused so many things to be ‘Made in China’.
7 letters; EPA, OSHA.
In my estimation that covers 75% of the reasons ‘Made in China’ became so prevalent.
China has to do something with all those dollars they got from us or lose their value to rampant QE.............................
The next ‘China’ will be African countries.........................
Interesting they go to Virginia.
Another Virginia company was bought by China..Smithfield. Makers of hams and other meat products.
We avoid their hams now. Buying other brands.
I will never knowingly buy any Chinese foodstuffs or pet products.
They are noted for adulterating food, etc. any way they can get away with.
Yes, I know we get Chinese ingredients in some products, but if I can avoid it I do.
Same here. Just do not trust them.
Not a chance
China itself is investing money in Africa for industrial output..............Africa will be China’s China..............
I didn’t know Smithfield was Chinese. I don’t buy often but their products were always superior. Wont be buying in the future. Thank you so much for the info.
There has been no more Smithfield products in this house....
Junk is bought because too many Americans want cheap prices for the ‘best,’ which does not exist. If we want better, we have to pay more and not throw it out the minute we think we need something new.
Out with the old boss and in with the new. It could be interesting.
You don't really believe they're all in Redmond, do you? Almost half of their 90,000+ employees are overseas:
It was a figure of speech.
I have quite a few friends that work for Microsoft, and have for a VERY long time.
If you get my drift.
BTW, I used to live a couple blocks from Paul Allen on Mercer Island near the scar.
