Russia Continues Massive Military Modernization Despite Economic Woes

MOSCOW (AP) — Hundreds of new Russian aircraft, tanks and missiles are rolling off assembly lines. Russian jets roar through European skies under NATO's wary eye. Tens of thousands of troops take part in war games showing off the military's readiness for all-out war.

The muscle flexing suggests that Russia's economic woes so far are having no impact on the Kremlin's ambitious military modernization program.

Most Russian economic sectors face a 10 percent cut this year as Russia heads into recession. The military budget, meanwhile, rose by 33 percent to about 3.3 trillion rubles (some $50 billion). The buildup reflects President Vladimir Putin's apparent readiness to raise the ante in a showdown with the West over Ukraine — but it is unclear whether Russia can afford the modernization drive amid slumping oil prices and Western sanctions.

Russia may be cutting back on some spending in the face of economic slowdown. But the country continues to place top priority on its military buildup. Building a high quality, professional military is seen as essential to protect the country's sovereignty, assert its national interests and thwart NATO's expansion towards its borders.

For President Putin, nothing else matters in the near and long term to Russia's future.

Which is what brought down the USSR sooner rather than later. The Soviets feared Reagan's buildup and what they thought was his total game changer Star Wars and spent their resources pursuing military and other things they could not build and gutting the rest of the economy to that end. Reagan's people helped the process along by all sorts of subterfuge and deceptions which which the Soviets in their panic fell for far too easily and which years later got the NYT all in an indignant lather because their favorite Utopia had been brought down by cheating!

Because Russia plans to invade America, seeing how our military now wears pink camo.

Obama’s America is creating a hollowed-out military.

All the talk of helping Ukraine is simply that - talk.

Russia will win that test of wills with the West simply because Ukraine is in its backyard.

A little off topic but I just came across this.

Ukraine’s Tank Graveyard

Wonder how much one would cost to have shipped over here?

This is why Russia will never really be a superpower. 50 years from now their roads will still be impassable half the year.

It’s the 80’s ( and the 30’s ) all over again.

- Worldwide economic depression
- Soviets humiliated in their collapse
- Oil glut drops the price of crude, causing the Russians to face yet another humiliating collapse
- Putin didn’t modernize the economy when he had the chance, ensuring that as oil went, so went Russia, and made them a complete one trick pony.
- Putin is facing two choices - collapse, or adventurism.

Only problem - No Reagan (and no very good set of staffers advising Reagan) available to a) accelerate the economic collapse of Russia in favor of a true - pro capitalist gov’t and b) no CIA/military plan to keep Russia (and Iran) from invading Saudi Arabia (and then Israel).

Yeah they are going to build weapons. They are going to do it while they have a complete idiot bent on exacting his daddy’s (whoever that may be) revenge on the US and the UK.

Countries go to war when economies are in shambles. One sure fire way to create economic activity...crank up the military assembly lines.

You are correct I keep saying ground troops and missile shield should be deployed to the Baltic States.

When we had their scientific contingency here, back in the later 80’s, we hauled their gear down the highway at 60 mph. They freaked, for fear we’d hit a pot hole and careen into the ditch. We laughed! They were amazed at how nice the highways and roads were. When I went over there, we crawled down the roadways with our gear for fear of careening into the ditches!

Yes my BIL is with the State Dept. He used to have to escort diplomatic stuff in truck convoys to Moscow from time to time. He said they stopped at the last grocery store in I think Finland and stocked up the RV. He wouldn’t eat any of the food and he said 50 miles out from Moscow its Ox Carts and wagons. This was in the 90’s. I don’t think its much better now. They just do not spend money on infrastructure.

“Building a high quality, professional military is seen as essential...”

And they’re still years away from having one.

You’re absolutely on target...pardon the pun.

Unfortunately, Obozo and his trusty sidekick Lerch are going to piddle dick around until Russians cross into Moldova.

You got that right! And it is reasonable—why would I as a Roosky, spend money on paint to make my property look good, when I am having a hard time finding food. That mentality percs all the way to the top, except that it is pure greed at the top
