That was probably the caramel coloring /corn syrup concoction they use in making the soda; I’ve found it too from time to time. It can get thick like caramel candy and sometimes it doesn’t get thoroughly mixed in.
Admittedly it DOES feel like chewing tobacco spit, and though it tastes like caramel the natural physical reaction to the unpleasant surprise overrides the sense of taste and out it comes. Ack. I know the difference though because I once came back into a room and grabbed a can of pop I’d been drinking without realizing that the janitor had spit his chaw in it earlier- he thought it was his trusty spit can. Now that was a hundred times worse than the caramel globs.
