If used to be better when you could pummel any kid who insulted you. No adult intervention needed.

Grades 1-12, 1948-60, there was bullying in every grade.

In grades 1-7, there were fights on the playground or after school and sometimes the PE coach would just have kids put on boxing gloves in the gym and let us go at it... until one obviously had the upper hand.

Grades 8-12 had few fights on school property. The bullying and fights usually occurred after the Friday night movies and resulted in trips to a clinic or hospital.

Those years and events taught us kids how to deal with various situations; confront the bully or walk away. Walking away usually didn’t end the bullying, but knocking the hell out of the bully did.
