Time to Close Gitmo? Obama says yes. Did He Ask the Loved Ones of the World Trade Center Victims?

In 2008, then-candidate Obama made a promise to close Guantánamo Bay, which could be chalked up to political talk. However, every time the State of the Union speech comes around, he continues to talk of closing Gitmo. Using the same narrative numerous times, he has not come to grips with the error of his ways.

What the president seems to be ignoring is the rate of recidivism. Liz Cheney noted that the Bush administration probably released more detainees than this administration. However, an important point she makes is that the Obama administration should look upon this as a cautionary tale. She stated, “The terrorists left are the radical hardcore Islamists. They believe in the caliphate and sharia law. They want to rule the world and will slaughter anyone who opposes their beliefs.”

The president still claims that Guantánamo Bay is a recruitment tool for terrorists. Congressman Tom Rooney (R-Fla.), the chairman of Intelligence Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, does not consider the president’s argument accurate: “Gitmo is a not recruiting tool of any significance whatsoever. They have a laundry list of perceived grievances against us and our way of life, and Gitmo is pretty low on that list. If they’re using it to recruit now, and we closed it, they’d just replace it with something else. Anyone who thinks freeing Gitmo detainees so they can go back into the fight would result in fewer terrorists, not more, is kidding themselves. Terrorists don’t like any of our strategies to defeat them or keep them off the battlefield. Are we really going to let them dictate our strategy?”

Former CIA director Michael Hayden does not concede that Gitmo “is a recruiting tool. If it closes, I don’t think anything will change.

It’s OK to close the detention facility at GITMO, just as long as the inmates are sent to Jordan and not merely released to continue their Jihadi ways. Jordan apparently knows how to handle terrorists.

"Did He Ask the Loved Ones of the World Trade Center Victims?"

In his mind, that'd be the Saudi hijackers, right?

Obama doesn’t care if the Gitmo detainees return to terrorism. To him, it is a bigger crime to keep these dangerous terrorists safely locked away.

What I think he’s going to do is close Gitmo and then, as a gesture of “good will”, give the entire base back to Cuba. Just watch.

Yeah, he’s got to close it. Probably promised Kastro he would give it back along with all the military equipment and stuff we have down there. If any ships are tied up in the harbor, he’ll leave them also.

I'm sure he asked his loved ones, the current guests at Gitmo, what they wanted. Gotta be inclusive, and take in their wants. (and exclusive to any other wants)

Close Gitmo.
Load the detainees on a B-52.
Take off to the Middle East.
Drop them from 30,000 feet over the Isis monkeys.

in asymmetric warfare, when dealing with an enemy that uses a distributed network of people that barely know each other, it’s a huge advantage to cast doubt on that communications network.

having a prison with hundreds or thousands of faceless enemy soldiers captured participating in that network is huge. the enemy doesn’t know which node of the network is valid or compromised.

this is why it was a huge victory for AQ when lawyers started divulging names. it’s an even bigger win to have it shut down entirely

I’m ok with closing Gitmo, but only if he uses the King Abdullah (Jordan) method of emptying the cells.

Yes - call it The Jordanian Closure. Should have been done YEARS ago.

RE: Yes - call it The Jordanian Closure. Should have been done YEARS ago.

I sort of asked a liberal friend that... her response is (paraphrase):

“It will make us as barbaric as they are. We have to prove to the world that we are a better people than that.”

The last I heard, Cuba has never cashed any of our annual rental checks for Guantanamo.

AND....not long ago....Russia forgave a massive debt that Cuba owed Russia.

I'd say the entire timing of this is to knife Russia.

Any smart leader would do the opposite....make sure we have gitmo to balance Russia.

I can just see Cuba giving gitmo to Russia if Obama gives it back.

That’s the thinking that they’re counting on. What a fool.

We should follow the words of the great and mighty Obama - IF THEY HAVE A KNIFE, BRING A GUN.....or something like that.

Best bet is he will “return” Gitmo to Cuba within the year, certainly before next January.

He does care if they return to terrorism. The same way he cares about Iran’s nukes. He cares but not necessarily in the way you would. ISIS needs the expertise he can provide. When the price of oil kicked Iran in the gut, he released all those billions of sequestered dollars to Iran to compensate. He cares.
