Obama administration shuts down Bush’s ‘clean coal’ project

The Obama administration has shut down a Bush administration federal project aimed at demonstrating “clean coal” technology.

The $1.7 billion FutureGen 2.0 project was meant to build a coal-fired power plant in Illinois that captures carbon and pumps it underground.

Congress authorized $1.1 billion toward the project in 2009 as a continuation of a 2003 project Bush proposed.

“The U.S. Department of Energy has directed the suspension of FutureGen 2.0 project development activities,” Ken Humphreys, head of the public-private FutureGen Alliance developing the plant, said in a Tuesday statement.

“The DOE has concluded that there is insufficient time to complete the project before federal funding expires in September 2015. Despite the Alliance’s commitment to advancing carbon capture and storage technology and cleaner energy from coal, as well as our belief that there are solutions to address the impending deadline, the Alliance must comply with DOE’s directive.”

So if a Republican president is inaugurated in 2017, he can shut down all of Obama’s green scams. But will they?

The Dims have been losing the support of the traditional energy industries since the 1970s, because the Dims caved to environmental activists. Because of that the Dims are trying to create a new class of crony-capitalists, beholden to them, in the “alternative” energy sector. Continuing anything in the existing major energy sector does not serve that agenda.

When I was in college in '06 -'07 all I heard was "Clean Coal, Clean Coal, Natural Gas, Clean Coal, Natural Gas"

Well Hells Bells, look what we have know.

Clean Coal and an Ocean of Natural Gas.

Now its all bad!

It taught me an important lesson, the issue is not the Issue, the Issue is the Revolution.

Yup. Never believe what the left says today because they're just trying to get to the next step by any means.

If it is a federal authorization deadline causing the problem, Congress should extend the deadline. I imagine Senate Democrats would filibuster or Obama would veto the bill, but at least we could put them on the record for killing clean coal.

I’m okay w/ shutting down this project. Carbon capture is stupid. If carbon sequestration is really something we need to do to ‘save our planet’, then let’s stop recycling paper and just landfill it (Watch the environmentalists’ heads explode as they wrap their arms around that nugget).

What I’m not okay with is his war on coal and bankrupting of the coal industry.
