“The Egyptians are fed up of Hamas.”
The article reported:
“As a follow-up, Egypt on Saturday banned Hamas’s “military wing,” the Al-Qassam Brigades, as a terrorist organization.”
This is actually quite a historic break, and establishes a legal basis for “open season” rules of engagement.
It looks like quite the anvil is now in place on Gaza’s Southern border, should the hammer come down.
Oh, and here’s a little throwaway line in the story: “Egypt has demolished thousands of homes in expelling all Gazans from the Sinai border”. That is the kind of thing for which Israel would encounter a firestorm of criticism for years. For Egypt, it is mentioned like a fun fact in passing - just obscure trivia.
Egypt might just send an armored division through Gaza for a weekend romp if they feel like it sometime. As long as Israel doesn’t fire back, there is not a damn thing Hamas could do about it.
It is not inconceivable that Israel might invite Egypt to do just that. There is always the worry, though that Egypt might not then leave.
