Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
― C.S. Lewis

Quite frankly, there are just as many petty tyrants, blue noses and busybodies on there right as one the left.

There are hundreds of reasons why I am a small government conservative. This is just one of them. Composting is sensible, but it should not be compelled by government force.

My favorite words in the Constitution, and they occur more than once, ar e”Congress shall make no law”.

“Progressive” politicians are like arsonists — they set firs in order to put them out and be hailed as heroes.

“There ought to be a law” is a convoluted and yet publicly acceptable way of threatening violence and murder on people.

Can you imagine the scene at the courthouse on Monday morning...Your Honor, I got this $1.00 ticket for disposing of my watermelon rinds in the garbage....I’m certain that those rinds will be introduced into evidence and I’d just like to ascertain that those rinds are mine and if so, I’ll ashamedly pay the just penalty for doing so....

What the stupid liberals will unleash is the most capricious law of all...the law of unintended consequences. What many people will do is just take their garbage with them for a drive at night and dump their garbage in a ditch or the street. Or stuff their garbage in neighbors cans.
And how will they enforce these laws? The costs and time involved with enforcing their stupid laws will cause further headaches. Liberals are hopeless...but dangerous.

I wrote a similar essay on âtheir ought to be a lawâ here on FR once. It was on a thread involving mandatory seat belt laws or something similar. My essay even here was met with mixed results. So yes the problem of interventionist law making exists equally on the left and the right. I do also recall characterized advocating for new safety laws as an act of cowardice. My characterization was not well received.
