I didn't suggest that this article describes an appropriate way of using the concept of “grit” in education, but rather that it is, nonetheless, a valid concept that can, and is used well in some places.

I work with a high school where teachers and administrators use the concept. But no one gives students “grades” for grit, and in fact, teachers and administrators don't generally talk to the students about it. Nonetheless, it's a personal attribute that can be identified, evaluated, and encouraged.

There was a pretty good popular treatment of “grit” in a Forbes article a while back, giving a general idea of what it is and why it's important.
