The five most miserable countries in the world at the end of 2014 are, in order: Venezuela, Argentina, Syria, Ukraine, and Iran. In 2014, Argentina and Ukraine moved into the top five, displacing Sudan and Sao Tome and Principe.
The five least miserable are Brunei, Switzerland, China, Taiwan, and Japan. The United States ranks 95th, which makes it the 14th least miserable nation

Syria’s third on the list - unemployment is the reason. Apparently having a country full of bearded lunatics shooting and blowing up everything in sight didn’t make the criteria. But at least they’re employed.
Agreed, and in general I can’t agree with an analysis of misery or felicity that depends completely on questions of money.
On the other hand, maybe shooting and blowing up other people makes them happy. And the stonings and the beheadings are probably a bundle of chuckles but I don’t seem to see them smiling a lot. I guess I need to do a little more research...
They have Costa Rica worse than Pakistan. I admit I don’t understand their criteria.
