Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, said Wednesday it deplored the continued “mocking of Islam” by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
The kingdom is “surprised, and deplored” the publication last week of a new cartoon of the Muslim prophet Mohammed, the state Saudi Press Agency said, citing a source at the foreign ministry.
“The kingdom does not find any justification for such deliberate abuse against Islam, which insults the feelings of 1.5 billion Muslims around the world,” the source said.
Freedom of opinion and expression do not justify “insulting religious beliefs,” the source added.

My feelings are insulted that Christians cannot visit Mecca or have churches or Bibles in Saudi Arabia

Christianity has been mocked in different forms all the way back to Nero. Even Christians themselves do it. From Reformation-Era broadsides to Elmer Gantry, to SNL’s Church lady, to some threads right here on FR. It doesn’t even matter what sect or denomination of Christianity we are addressing, as there is plenty of mockery to go around. Some Christians get very offended when they see this, and they might even write a strongly worded letter to express their disapproval.
However, I have yet to see a news article about some offended Christian slaughtering those who produce an offensive cartoon.
Maybe in the 16th century, but we’ve grown up a bit since then.
