While the rich and royal members of ancient Egyptian society were buried in mummy masks of flaked gold and other precious metals, common people were forced to construct theirs with recycled pieces of paper. Recently, archaeologists found what they believe to be the world’s oldest piece of scripture in the mask of mummy from the first century. Researchers say the new scrap of spiritual papyrus is a portion of the the Gospel of Mark, the second chapter of the New Testament. The gospel scroll fragment dates to approximately 90 AD.

FWIW, the double "the" is there in the original. And whoever wrote this at Breitbart must be unfamiliar with Mark's gospel, to pass it off as a mere "chapter".

Maybe the author meant to say the second book of the New Testament.

I’ve asked for several corrections on Breitbart’s Big Hollywood and Big Government sites before. I usually chalk up most errors there and on other sites to rushing to meet publication deadlines. Sloppy? Yes. Acceptable? No. But almost understandable given today’s journalism standards.

It’s a UPI wire story, not a Breitbart piece.
