House Republicans ran into divisions Wednesday over the new Congress first abortion bill, and leaders were trying for a way to advance the legislation without an embarrassing split over the issue.
Legislation set for debate Thursday would ban virtually all abortions for pregnancies of 20 weeks or longer. It would offer some exceptions, including for victims of rapes that have already been reported to authorities.
Some Republicans were upset about that requirement, saying that many women feel too distressed to report rapes and should not be penalized.

Abortion needs to stay legal for the GOP to win elections.
Bunch of squishes.
ah. the tender mercies of man: we only require your life if you are conceived in a criminal act, or if you are not quite old enough to suit us.
20 weeks is 5 months pregnant; why would anyone object to a ban on abortion after being pregnant for 5 months? I do not buy the rape exception; it should not take 5 months for a woman to decide that a rape pregnancy is not wanted. In my opinion there shod be very few exceptions and only if it is a life or death situation for the mother.
