Former city pastor serves as keynote speaker for event
Abortion opponents held their 41st annual March for Life in Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon, marching from the St. Marys Performing Arts Center on West Berry Street to the federal courthouse downtown, some praying as they walked, some singing hymns and others walking silently.
Police estimated that 2,500 to 3,000 people participated in the march, which at its peak stretched from Berry Street downtown to Douglas Street behind the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory.
Once at the federal courthouse, marchers heard hymns and more speakers, including some expressing regret they had had an abortion.
Participants also recognized local clergy and medical professionals who have taken a position on abortion.
They keynote speaker at the rally was Mike Spencer, a longtime pastor in Fort Wayne and a pro-life leader. He lives in Ohio and is the Midwest director for Training for Life Training Institute.
Spencer quoted Vernon Johns, who was pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and who is regarded as a founder of the civil rights movement. He said Johns father told him that if he sees a good fight, get in it.
