If only it were that easy. Actually, the over the top Progressive response to Sniper demonstrates pretty well how the pieces of the narrative fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Back in B-School I saw a speech given by Steve Case. This was back about the time of the AOL-Time Warner merger. One of The big business benefits that he saw was that product owners could buy widespread dissemination and pervasiveness for what they were offering. He said that a product could be given a story in TIME, a segment on CNN, placement on Friends, plus commercial ad slots featuring Time Warner celebrity properties. All the pieces quickly working together to reinforce, indeed create, it’s own popularity. Thus pressuring people to buy it.
THATS exactly what we’re up against.
